Give Us Some Room, We’re Gonna Build A New World

Well, it wasn’t Neil Diamond’s best song, but the words do a pretty good job describing the new Environmental StoneWorks’ St. George, Utah, manufacturing facility that will be up and running this summer.

Why does Environmental StoneWorks need a larger manufacturing facility in Utah you ask? “The opportunity to gain market share, of course.” says Environmental StoneWorks’ President & CEO Chuck Stein. “Housing experts and economists alike support our strategy for the future. The housing and commercial construction markets west of the Rocky Mountains will continue to grow at a modest, yet steady rate. We’ve invested in additional resources in order to strategically cover rebounding areas in Washington, Oregon, and in California, such as Sacramento, the Central Valley, and other Southern California areas. A new, larger facility in St. George provides us a central location to service our current and future west-of-the-Rockies customers more efficiently.” Read More

A Near Miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, or damage – but had the potential to do so.

“There are so many benefits to having a near-miss reporting culture in place,” explains Environmental StoneWorks’ Director of EH&S Tom Goding. “Reporting Near Miss situations and identifying any trends are critical proactive steps that allow us to identify and manage existing situations that pose a risk to our employees and equipment.”

Early in March a Rocky Mountain Region manufacturing worker was seen stripping stone from the air inflation molds. The worker correctly inflated the mold but had a problem getting the stone out of the mold. He popped the mold box on its corner where the air had built up and the stone flew out in the direction of the worker. The stone narrowly missed the worker’s face, but he did not report a Near Miss and kept working.  Read More

Labor Shortages Threaten Rebound

According to the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, builder confidence is the strongest it has been since January 2006 and remains unchanged at the close of September. Even though mortgage rates have risen off historical lows, the Federal Reserve has committed to keep interest rates low as long as inflation stays down.
